Bhutan is pioneering a groundbreaking move by integrating cryptocurrency into its entire tourism ecosystem—becoming the first country to do so at a national level. In early May 2025, the Himalayan kingdom officially partnered with Binance Pay and DK Bank (Bhutan’s first fully digital bank) to create a seamless, crypto-powered travel experience.
Under this new system, any visitor with a Binance account can pay for nearly every part of their trip—airline tickets, tourist visa or Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), hotel stays, guided tours, monument entry, local transportation, and even fresh roadside fruit—using cryptocurrencies.

Over 100 merchants—including rural stall owners—have already joined the programme. Transactions are completed via QR codes (both static and dynamic), offering instant confirmation, zero gas fees, and encryption-level security. Payments are converted and settled in Bhutanese Ngultrum by DK Bank.
This initiative aligns neatly with Bhutan’s unique tourism philosophy, built around Gross National Happiness (GNH). The country follows a “high-value, low-volume” model, charging foreign visitors a $100 nightly SDF to finance sustainable development. Adopting crypto is seen as a way to marry cultural preservation and environmental care with financial innovation and inclusion.

Binance CEO Richard Teng praised the collaboration as a “commitment to innovation, inclusion, and convenience,” highlighting how digital payments can bridge economies and empower local vendors.
For Bhutanese entrepreneurs—especially in remote regions—this is a huge leap forward. Vendors can now process international payments using just smartphones and QR codes, bypassing the need for traditional banking infrastructure.
Overall, Bhutan has redefined the tourist journey—from visa issuance to souvenir purchase—as an entirely cashless, cardless experience powered by cryptocurrency. As the world’s first nation to do so, Bhutan sets a visionary example of how digital assets can enhance tourism, foster financial inclusion, and remain true to a sustainability-first ethos.
