Russia Seeks to Resume Direct Flights to the US – A Step Toward Diplomatic Thaw?

In a significant move toward mending diplomatic relations, Russian officials have proposed the resumption of direct flights between Russia and the United States. This initiative was presented during recent talks in Istanbul, where diplomats from both nations convened to address various bilateral issues.

Air travel between Russia and much of the West has been restricted since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, leading to retaliatory airspace bans. This disruption has affected Russian airlines, which have had to resort to extreme measures to maintain their fleets.

The Istanbul discussions also encompassed efforts to normalize embassy operations, which have been hindered by previous diplomatic expulsions and sanctions. Both sides agreed on steps to ensure the unimpeded financing of diplomatic missions and to create appropriate conditions for diplomats to perform their duties effectively.

This development follows a series of diplomatic engagements, including a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 12, and high-level meetings in Saudi Arabia on February 18. These interactions signal a mutual readiness to work toward restoring relations and addressing systemic strategic challenges.

The resumption of direct flights would not only facilitate travel between the two countries but also serve as a tangible step toward improving bilateral relations. As discussions progress, both nations appear committed to overcoming past grievances and fostering a more cooperative future.
