Connecting Scandinavia with mainland Europe
Denmark and Germany are now connected thanks to a 2008 pact. As an essential component of the European transportation network, the connection between Rødbyhavn in Denmark and Puttgarden in Germany will facilitate trade and benefit the entire region on an economic and social level.

The Fehmarnbelt tunnel will promote economic growth in the area, including the creation of employment and apprenticeships, both during construction and after it opens. The project will influence the education and experiences of incoming engineers, inspiring creativity and a desire to construct sustainably in the following generation.

With a total budget of more than €7 billion, the Fehmarnbelt tunnel is now one of the biggest infrastructural projects in Europe.

The superstructure tunnel’s engineering
With a precision of 15 mm, 89 huge tunnel elements will be plunged into the ground 40 meters below sea level to form the concrete tunnel. Each of the 79 pieces will have dimensions of 217 m by 42 m and a weight of more than 73,000 t. Ten more so-called “special,” two-story components will give tunnel systems and installations room, as well as quick access for maintenance personnel. The unique elements are roughly 1.8 kilometers apart from one another in their centers. The dimensions of the unique components will be 39 m long, 46.5 m broad, and 13.5 m high.

Realizing the Fehmarnbelt initiative
TEC participated in a competition to design the magnificent crossing between Denmark and Germany in collaboration with Ramboll and Arup.

Our team faced off against some of the most creative designers and engineering experts in the world in this competition, which was organized by state-owned Femern A/S, which was founded to develop, fund, and execute the Fehmarnbelt Link. Our joint company was given the responsibility of completing the conceptual design, procurement, and supervision for this iconic connection after our distinctive design was chosen.

This next-generation tunnel design, supported by suitable scoping studies, cost assessment, technical accuracy, and aesthetic evaluations, will provide a solution that is reliable and strong in terms of construction, operation, and maintenance for the next 120 years.

This record-breaking tunnel will have positive impact for individuals, who will save time on their commute, businesses who can switch to a quicker, shorter, more sustainable freight route, and the entire region as the connection brings economic growth and lowers carbon emissions.

The tunnel’s sustainability and efficiency
The Fehmarnbelt Link, a component of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), will boost the transition to sustainable transportation by increasing its competitiveness from a European and regional standpoint. By allowing freight and commuter traffic to take the quickest, most direct path, the tunnel will lower CO2 emissions, free up space on roads and railroads, and transfer freight from trucks to more ecologically friendly electric trains.

Compared to the existing ferry crossing, the two-lane dual highway and dual railway inside the tunnel will reduce the travel time for both road and rail users by approximately one hour each way. Additionally, bad weather won’t hamper the Fehmarnbelt tunnel, guaranteeing a more dependable transit.

In addition to providing easier access to eco-friendly transport, the project is being built with careful attention to biodiversity and the environment. Additional habitats for marine plant and animal life will be established by rebuilding stone reefs and adding stone protection for the tunnel, while green corridors will be developed to sustain insects, flora, and animals, including orchids and amphibians.
