According to a press release, Oxagon will be located on the outskirts of Neom, a newly created region in the kingdom’s northwest that will be 33 times the size of New York City. The centerpiece of Neom is the same-named smart city, which is currently under construction.

What is Oxagon?

Oxagon is NEOM’s economic and industrial engine, driving innovation in industry and technology while providing exceptional livability. This is the place where ideas can change the world. It is designed to attract global talent and breathe new life into manufacturing.

  • OXAGON provides clean energy and modern supply chain logistics to help business partners.
  • Beginning in 2022, OXAGON will welcome industrial pioneers.
  • Seven key industries that rely on renewable energy to drive industrial development
  • The development of NEOM’s Blue Economy is aided by the unique octagon design.

Oxagon, according to a dramatic but vague promotional video posted on Twitter by Neom on Tuesday, would be the world’s largest floating structure and “home to the world’s first fully automated port and integrated logistics hub.”

OXAGON is the industrial city reimagined – a place that provides everything your business needs to push beyond traditional boundaries.

Neom did not specify the cost of the Oxagon project or how the city would stay afloat.

The Red Sea is one of the busiest trade routes in the world, with 10% of all global trade passing through each year.

Neom is the brainchild of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the centerpiece of his 13-year “Vision 2030” plan to modernize the conservative kingdom.

Neom is supported by the Public Investment Fund of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (PIF). Both Neom and the PIF are chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed.

“Oxagon will be the catalyst for economic growth and diversity in Neom and the kingdom, further meeting our ambitions under Vision 2030. It will contribute to Saudi Arabia’s regional trade and commerce, and support creating a new focal point for global trade flows. I am pleased to see that.”

The Oxagon announcement follows those of other large-scale projects in Saudi Arabia, such as:

  • “The Line,” a proposed carbon-zero city that would run through the Neom region along a 105-mile line ending at the Red Sea.
  • Theme park “The Rig,” built atop an abandoned oil rig in the Arabian Gulf.
  • The “Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Non Profit City,” a planned city district in Riyadh’s capital that would house nonprofit organizations and sustainable businesses.
