Is it possible? Probably not, it is the answer that comes instinctively. But…
The idea of this article came to me while I was sitting at home thinking how all this craziness with the coronavirus stopped the trips. I’m not saying it’s not a rational, welcome reaction, just that the frustration of those who love to travel exists. And suddenly I remembered that I had a virtual reality headset in the house. You probably have experienced virtual reality or if not, you definitely know what it is. In short, virtual reality refers to artificial environments created on the computer that offer a simulation of reality so successful, that the user can get the impression of almost real physical presence, both in certain real places and in imaginary places. And when I say physical presence, it’s just about the feeling that you’re there. When playing a game of formula one (well done, on high quality equipment) in virtual reality, the immersive experience is so strong that at the first turn you will feel exactly what you feel in reality.
This is because our brain, in certain situations, is very easy to fool. The visual stimulus is so real that the brain is convinced that it is a turn and somehow produces the sensation produced by the effect of the centrifugal force, although this force does not exist. And, believe me, at the first turn I almost fell off the chair from which I was “driving”. It is the same with the feeling of height when you are in a tall building or that of dizziness when you are on a roller coaster. And look like this, the clear answer from the beginning of the article, that you cannot travel home, it is not so categorical.
Virtual reality offers you countless possibilities: there are many 360 degree VR videos from all over the world, many hotels have created 360 degree VR tours, there are softwares that allow you to visit famous museums or see different places.
You can easily, without leaving the room you are in, reach a beach in Maldives, fascinating Singapore or picturesque Bali … It is true that you will not feel the white sand, the moisture in the air or the smell of sticks. But at the moment your brain will not realize that they are missing! It’s more than anything. I say it’s worth a try .. 🙂
