Travel through Edinburgh Airport just got faster, easier, and greener. Thanks to a major £24 million investment, passengers can now breeze through security without removing liquids or large electronics from their bags.
The airport has completed the installation of eight cutting-edge 3D security scanners, transforming its security hall and adding two new lanes. This upgrade is part of VINCI Airports’ global push toward innovation, already being adopted at several of its locations.
What’s New for Travelers?
- Liquids up to 100ml can now stay in hand luggage – no more single-use plastic bags.
- Laptops, tablets, and other large electronics no longer need to be removed at checkpoints.
- With 3D imaging technology, security staff get a clearer view of luggage contents, ensuring even higher safety standards.
Michael Hering, Head of Security at Edinburgh Airport, shared:
“This is great news for the millions of passengers who pass through our airport every year. With this technology, 97% of travelers now clear security in under 10 minutes. It’s a faster, more secure process—just in time for the busy summer season.”
Not only does this upgrade significantly speed up screening, but it also supports sustainability goals by eliminating the need for single-use plastic bags at security checkpoints.

Things to Remember Before You Fly:
- Liquids must still be in containers of 100ml or less, even though they can stay in your bag.
- There’s no limit to how many 100ml containers you can carry.
- Rules may vary at other airports, especially on return journeys, so always check before you travel.
This high-tech upgrade puts Edinburgh Airport at the forefront of aviation innovation in the UK, offering a smoother and more secure passenger experience for all.
