In a strategic move to revitalize its economy and tourism sector, New Zealand has announced relaxed visitor visa regulations aimed at attracting digital nomads and influencers. Effective immediately, visitors can work remotely for foreign employers while staying in the country for up to 90 days, with potential extensions up to nine months.

Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis highlighted that this initiative is designed to draw skilled IT professionals from regions like the United States and East Asia. “We want more wealth and super-talented people coming in the arrival gates,” Willis stated, emphasizing that these remote workers would not be competing with local jobs but would instead contribute to the economy through their spending and potential investments.

The move comes as New Zealand seeks to recover from the economic downturn and a significant decline in tourism revenue caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, tourism was the country’s largest export industry, contributing $40.9 billion. Recent figures show a slight recovery, with tourism bringing in $37.7 billion in 2023.

With this policy change, New Zealand joins over 50 countries that offer digital nomad visas. However, such initiatives have faced criticism in other regions for contributing to overcrowding and straining local resources. Opposition finance spokesperson Barbara Edmonds questioned the policy’s effectiveness and consistency, pointing out a perceived double standard in the government’s approach to remote work.

Despite these concerns, the government is optimistic that the relaxed visa rules will attract global talent and provide a much-needed boost to the nation’s economy.
