The most contentious natural area in Hawaii has once again drawn attention after authorities say that 14 persons were recently detained for illegal hiking in Hawaii, entering the Haiku Stairs on the island of Oahu.
These 4,000 metal steps, constructed by the US Navy during World War II and abandoned shortly after, are stunning but surprising. The stairs are in a secluded part of Kaneohe, and the only way to get to them is by an unsafe climb.
“It’s incredibly disrespectful and self-centered for anyone to be on the Haiku Stairs, or on the Middle Ridge Trail, when it’s been made abundantly clear that these areas are off-limits for safety and natural resource protection reasons,” Jason Redulla, chief of Hawaii’s Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) said in a statement, which bore the ominous warning that “someone is going to get hurt or killed.”
DOCARE reports that all of the individuals who were taken into custody during the previous week were accused with criminal trespassing, a misdemeanour that carries a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail. It’s unclear if the eight of the fourteen were trekking together when they were taken into custody on September 3.
“People should exercise caution while entering the work area and when attempting to descend the ridge. They must consider the repercussions in the event that someone is injured, or worse, and requires rescue. First responders may find it challenging to get to, which could cause a delay in medical care, according to Redulla.
In 1987, the Haiku Stairs—also referred to as the “stairway to heaven”—were closed to the general public. However, social media has given the unusual location some notoriety. Adventurous Instagrammers and YouTubers have been praising the breathtaking vistas from the summit of the 2,800-foot mountain trail, where the stairs occasionally seem to vanish into the mist above.
DOCARE claims that the hikers reached the staircase by using climbing ropes.
The local community has experienced difficulties as a result of the steps’ notoriety, including trespassers, increased security expenses, and dangerous hiker rescues from the isolated area.
The Honolulu City Council decided to demolish the Haiku Stairs in 2021. The steps have been constructed piecemeal, with each segment being separated from the mountainside and subsequently lifted out by helicopter.
The $2.5 million procedure to remove the stairs, according to a local organisation called Friends of the Haiku Stairs, is too costly.
When a temporary injunction was granted earlier this year by the Hawaii Court of Appeals, some of the deconstruction work was already finished.
