After 60 years, the sacred historic Trans Bhutan hiking trail will reopen!

After 60 years, the Kingdom of Bhutan is preparing to reopen its famous and sacred Trans Bhutan Trail to visitors. After two years of extensive restoration, the 400-kilometer-long historic trail will reopen in March 2022. Two new active trekking itineraries will be introduced: an 11-day Camp the Trans Bhutan Trail trip and a 12-day Highlights of the Trans Bhutan Trail trip.

“We’re honored to be working with the Bhutan Canada Foundation and the Trans Bhutan Trail to launch the newly restored trail in magical Bhutan,” said G Adventures, the team behind the restoration work.

The sacred trail has been around for over a thousand years! The trail is revered because it served as a pilgrimage route for Buddhists traveling to several sacred sites in Bhutan and Tibet. For thousands of years, messengers, monks, and traders used the trail. Unfortunately, the trail’s stairways were destroyed after the national highway was built in the 1960s.

With the help of the Bhutan Canada Foundation and the Bhutan Tourism Council, the trail is set to reopen in March 2022, promising new adventures.

Bhutan is one of only two carbon-negative countries in the world, for those who are unaware. It is also one of the top ten biodiversity hotspots. The revered trail will pass through some spectacular mountain ridges and lush valleys. It will also link more than a dozen towns and villages to several historic and cultural sites throughout the country, including nine Dzong Fortresses.

The two new Trans Bhutan Trail trails, which will begin on May 1, 2022, are now available for booking. The trail costs $3,149 per person.
