A Milestone for Egypt’s Modern Rail Revolution
Egypt has taken a major step toward a new transportation future with the official unveiling of the Velaro high-speed train, developed by Siemens Mobility. The new model, showcased at TransMEA 2025 in Cairo, marks the beginning of a transformative era in Egyptian rail travel—one that combines speed, innovation, and sustainability.
The Velaro will be the first train of its kind in the country, capable of reaching speeds up to 250 km/h and designed to perform efficiently even under Egypt’s extreme desert conditions.
Building One of the World’s Largest High-Speed Rail Networks
This milestone is part of Egypt’s ambitious plan to create a 2,000-kilometer high-speed rail network, which, once completed, will rank among the top six largest systems in the world. The network aims to connect Cairo with major cities such as Alexandria, Ain Sokhna, and Marsa Matrouh—linking about 90% of Egypt’s population.
The first operational route, known as the Green Line, will stretch approximately 660 kilometers, cutting travel times dramatically and enhancing national connectivity.
Engineered for the Desert
Unlike European high-speed models, the Egyptian Velaro has been specifically adapted for desert environments. It features advanced cooling systems, enhanced dust protection, and a digital twin for continuous performance monitoring. These innovations ensure optimal operation in the country’s challenging climate while reducing maintenance needs.
Driving Economic Growth and Sustainability
Beyond speed and comfort, the project represents a significant step toward sustainable mobility. The electrified network will help reduce CO₂ emissions, ease road congestion, and stimulate economic development by connecting industrial regions and ports.
Siemens Mobility will also manage a 15-year maintenance contract, ensuring long-term reliability and supporting job creation through local partnerships.
