Why are there “portals” in New York and Dublin?
“We are thrilled to establish a connection between Dublin and New York, as we have a strong historical and cultural relationship,” stated Dublin’s Lord Mayor, Daithí de Róiste, following the portal’s opening on Wednesday in front of several hundred spectators.
“The Dublin Portal will also have connections to other international city destinations in Brazil, Lithuania, and Poland starting in July.”

The portal’s primary concept is connecting. Dublin approved it as part of the recent accreditation of the city as the European City of Smart Tourism 2024.

The creator of the Portal, Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys, says, “Portals are an invitation to meet people above borders and differences and to experience our world as it really is—united and one.”

The gateway has proven to be well-liked by Dublin residents, who flock to see what’s going on on the other side of the globe.

In the twenty-four hours since its inception, there have been a few, well, unusual interactions.

A Dubliner is shown in a video published on social media attempting to provide his phone number to a special someone in New York who is on the opposite side.

Another video that went viral showed cops forcibly removing a person who was blocking the portal.

An Irish institution posted a picture of one of its American students using the portal camera to connect with their mother in New York, which is a more touching scene.
