Eurostar Announces New Direct Routes from the UK to Germany and Switzerland

Eurostar has unveiled plans to launch direct train services from London to Frankfurt and Geneva as part of a significant expansion scheduled for the early 2030s.

🌍 Expanding to New Destinations
Aiming to tap into rising demand for eco-friendly travel, Eurostar plans to add four daily services to Frankfurt and three to Geneva. Frankfurt, Europe’s financial powerhouse, and Geneva—with its access to Swiss and French ski resorts—were chosen due to strong leisure and business travel interest.

🚄 Fast Travel Across Europe
The journey from London to Frankfurt is expected to take around five hours, and to Geneva about 5 hours 20 minutes—competitive with, or even quicker than, many plane transfers .

🛠 Fleet & Infrastructure Upgrades
Eurostar is planning to invest approximately €2 billion to acquire up to 50 new trains, boosting its fleet to around 67 units. Meanwhile, London’s St Pancras International station and other border-crossing infrastructure across Europe will undergo upgrades to accommodate the new services.

📈 Riding a Sustainability Wave
In 2024, Eurostar carried nearly 19.5 million passengers, with corporate bookings seeing a sharp rise. Major firms such as Deloitte, BCG, and JPMorgan are actively encouraging employees to choose rail travel over short-haul flights. CEO Gwendoline Cazenave noted that travelers are increasingly open to longer journeys for sustainability reasons.

🤝 Addressing Operational Hurdles
Successful launch of these routes depends on navigating several challenges:

  • Securing passport and customs processes (juxtaposed checks) at new destinations.
  • Expanding departure zones at St Pancras to manage up to 5,000 passengers per hour (currently 1,800).
  • Negotiating train depot access amid increasing competition from incoming operators like Virgin, FS Italiane, and Gemini, who also aim to launch cross-Channel services by around 2029.

🔍 Competitive Landscape & Opportunities
Support from the UK and Swiss governments is already in motion, following a memorandum of understanding last month to facilitate these new rail links. Industry interest is heating up: Italy’s FS, Virgin, and start-up Gemini are vying to launch their own Channel Tunnel services, prompting regulators to reconsider access to vital facilities like the Temple Mills depot near London.

In summary, Eurostar’s strategy to extend services to Germany and Switzerland reflects growing demand for greener travel options, backed by major investment and international cooperation—but execution hinges on resolving infrastructure, border, and regulatory challenges.
