Massive 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Myanmar, Tremors Felt in Bangkok

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook central Myanmar on Friday, March 28, 2025, at around 12:50 PM local time. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter was located just west of Mandalay, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The tremors were felt as far as Bangkok, Thailand, nearly 1,000 kilometers to the south.

Widespread Destruction in Myanmar

In Myanmar, the earthquake caused severe damage, especially in Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, home to 1.2 million residents. Reports indicate that several residential buildings collapsed, and a bridge fell into a river. In Taungoo, central Myanmar, a mosque collapsed during prayers, killing at least three people. In response, the ruling military junta declared a state of emergency in six regions and appealed for international humanitarian aid.

Panic and Chaos in Bangkok

In Bangkok, thousands of people evacuated high-rise buildings as tremors rattled the city. A construction site collapsed, tragically killing at least two people and trapping over 40 workers. Thai authorities have declared Bangkok a disaster zone, with emergency rescue teams working around the clock to locate survivors.

Shockwaves Felt Across Southeast Asia

The earthquake’s effects were widespread, with tremors reaching as far as China’s Yunnan province, where authorities reported injuries and structural damage.

Authorities in Myanmar and Thailand are continuing rescue operations, assessing the full extent of the devastation. Residents have been urged to stay alert for aftershocks and follow official safety guidance.
