A unique solar eclipse flight that will travel along the path of totality and allow passengers to see the eclipse at 30,000 feet was announced by Delta on Monday.
This is an alluring chance to witness the year’s greatest astronomical spectacle if you haven’t made reservations to view a solar eclipse yet.
Arriving in Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) at 4:20 p.m. ET, Delta flight 1218 will take off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) at 12:15 p.m. CT. For those in flight, that path maximizes the length of the eclipse by practically following the path of totality.
Delta will be using the Airbus A220-300 aircraft on this particular voyage, which further improves the viewing experience because of the plane’s extra-large windows that let in more natural light. Or, more darkness in the eclipse case!
Eric Beck, Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning, said in a statement that “this flight is the result of significant collaboration and exemplifies the close teamwork Delta is known for”—from choosing an aircraft with larger windows to figuring out the precise departure time from Austin and the experiences at the gate and in the air. “Our customers will be able to enjoy the experience of seeing a total eclipse from the air thanks to the efforts of teams throughout the company.”
