When you look up Zante or Zakynthos on Instagram, the wreckage of an ancient ship dominates nearly half of the photos that show this Greek island.
One of the island’s most popular and photographed locations is Navagio Beach and its 43-year-old shipwreck; tour firms provide specialized trips there.

However, recent images uploaded on Instagram demonstrate the extent of the vessel’s degradation over the last ten years.
Authorities have now become aware of the boat’s condition due to concerns that it may be totally washed away, taking with it a sizable portion of the island’s tourism revenue.
Can you still go to the shipwreck beach on Zakynthos Island?
Navagio Beach, also known as Smugglers’ Cove or Shipwreck Beach, is well-known for the MV Panagiotis wreck, which ran aground in 1980.
The rumors that the ship was carrying contraband and that the crew abandoned it during a strong storm to avoid the pursuing navy add to its legendary look.
The bay, surrounded by striking limestone bluffs and immaculate light sand, is one of the island’s most popular locations for photos.

After a section of the cliff above crumbled in 2018, the beach was temporarily blocked and swimming and boat anchoring were prohibited.
An additional landslide happened in September 2022 as a result of an earthquake between Kefalonia and Zakynthos that had a magnitude of 5.4. Except for boats entering from the water, access to the beach was once more forbidden and has been that way.
The famous shipwreck in Zante could disappear.
The shipwreck is not the only peril faced by the delicate cliffs that cup the bay.
The local press said that the schooner broke apart due to a recent round of harsh weather.
Comparative images demonstrate the wreck’s years-long degradation.
Locals and tourism providers have called on the government to act quickly to save the vessel, pointing out how crucial it is to the island’s economy. Some have gone so far as to offer to oversee and finance the shipwreck’s conservation personally.
Greece’s Ministries of Tourism and Economy and Finance are now being urged to take action to safeguard the site by Zakynthos Mayor Giorgos Stasinopoulos and Member of Parliament Dionysis Aktypis. The Zakynthos municipality is interested in managing the shipwreck and repairing the damage.

Additionally, the establishment of a controlled entry system with an electronic payment mechanism is what the mayor is suggesting.
Although the plans have not yet been formally approved, local officials are pressing for quick action to prevent the popular tourist destination from going extinct.
